Woman smiling after getting professional teeth whiteningBrilliant, sparking-white teeth are the foundation of a gorgeous smile. Yellow or discolored teeth can hold you back from smiling, which can be a detriment in social, professional, and romantic situations. If you've tried at-home teeth-whitening products, you may have noticed that they're not very useful.

At South Natick Dental, board-certified family and cosmetic dentist Dr. Svetlana Novak offers professional teeth whitening services that can restore dazzling white teeth and give you a smile you're proud to show off. Dr. Novak can help you recover the self-confidence that comes from wanting to smile. This blog breaks down why in-office teeth whitening from Dr. Novak is a superior option to at-home products.

How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

When you come into our cozy office, you'll be prepped for teeth-whitening treatment. It's a simple procedure, and Dr. Novak and her team will make it as comfortable as possible for you.

Dr. Novak will use gauze and potentially retractors to isolate the rest of your mouth from your teeth. She'll also place a barrier next to your gum line for further protection. These will keep the whitening solution on your teeth and away from your tongue, cheeks, lips, and gums.

Once your teeth are isolated, Dr. Novak will apply the whitening solution. She'll coat your teeth, then use a curing light to activate it. Once your teeth have reached your desired shade, Dr. Novak will rinse your teeth. During one procedure, you may be able to achieve up to 10 shades of whitening. The treatment should take less than one hour.

Why Professional Teeth Whitening is Better Than At-Home Products

At-home teeth whitening products aren't as thorough, comfortable, or personalized as professional treatments. There are numerous reasons why they won't whiten your teeth as much as an in-office procedure.

Over-the-counter whitening products are not as reliable as professional treatments. They may only be one-fifth as potent, meaning they won't whiten your teeth as dramatically or as quickly. If you have more severe stains, they may not be enough at all.

There's also no way to ensure that your at-home whitening kit is completely safe and pain-free. When Dr. Novak treats you, she will take precautions to keep the whitening solution from touching other areas of your mouth. You can't guarantee this at home.

At-home whitening trays are often marketed as one-size-fits-all, but that usually ends up meaning "one-size-fits-none." If the tray doesn't conform to the shape of your teeth, any whitening you do get may be partial, incomplete, and uneven.

Dr. Novak is a different kind of dentist. As a 7-year-old in her native Russia, she visited a dentist who restrained her, then extracted one of her teeth without warning or anesthesia. This traumatic experience gave her a long-term fear of the dentist.

However, this also inspired her to become a dentist. She strives to give her patients the experience her 7-year-old self would have wanted. This means that Dr. Novak is committed to providing you with a safe, comfortable dental experience that delivers the results you desire.

She serves Natick, Wellesley, Dover, Sherborn, and nearby areas of Massachusetts. Call (508) 655-8020 today to schedule a consultation.
